So begins A WINTER TALE, a new play and film production created and co-written by Frances-Anne Solomon. A WINTER TALE is set against a backdrop of unrealized hopes, in a multi-racial, working class Toronto community. As the story unfolds, six Black men come together tentatively to form a support group that meets in a local Caribbean restaurant in the hope that they will find pathways leading to their own salvation and to the healing of their community. At times, bitter and tragic, and at other times, hopeful and humourous, the play is firmly rooted in the life if the street, with the city of Toronto itself as a central character.

]]> Ramabai Espinet of Coming Home interviewed by Toronto Sun tag:www.ledaserene.ca,2006:/mtnew//1.68 2006-05-08T16:19:34Z 2006-08-23T04:45:44Z "Ramabai Espinet: Coming Home" is one of the programs in the Literature Alive documentary series. It aired on OMNI May 6th and 7th. Read the Toronto Star's Nicholas Davis' account of his interview with the esteemed author.

Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and William Woodsworth were just a few of the great authors whose classic books lined the shelves of Ramabai Espinet's home while growing up in San Fernando, Trinidad, in the 1950s.

Around this time there was also an emergence of great Caribbean writers. This exposed Espinet to the works of Trinidadian author V.S. Naipaul, St. Lucian author Derek Walcott and many other West Indian writers. These works set the foundation for Espinet's future.

"I related so much to what they were writing about because they were writing about the world around me and the city I was growing up in," Espinet says. "I knew from back then that I wanted to be a writer."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Toronto, ON February 22, 2005 – Shots ring out on a winter night. A stray bullet meant for a local street dealer kills a nine year-old boy. So begins A Winter Tale, a new independent feature-length film written and directed by Frances-Anne Solomon, and produced by Solomon’s company Leda Serene Films. It will be shot on location in Toronto’s Parkdale neighborhood, and released in 2006.
